About the teacher and her philosophy on music.

Elizabeth Chia

Elizabeth is an all rounded musician trained in a few different disciplines. She graduated with a Bachelor of Music majoring in voice and a Bachelor of Media Arts (Honours) in music production. She has performed around New Zealand and Singapore in festivals, public events and corporate events.

She has been teaching piano and voice for 12 years now and coaching singing groups for 17 years, catering to a wide range of groups and ages. Her experience consists of performing as a multi-instrumentalist and recording in the studio as a producer and an artist. The most recent project was TOHU with the single,  Tū Mai Te Reo, which made the top 10 hottest singles and the top 10 waiata charts in May 2023.

She has had music lessons since the age of 3 at Yamaha music school in Singapore and loved it ever since. There have been some interesting musical experiences like being in an award winning secondary school handbell choir and primary school all girls choir which recorded a choral album for fundraising in Singapore.

She has also had the pleasure of attending workshops by Pat Pattison (legendary songwriting tutor at Berklee College of Music, John Mayer) and Anna Laverty (producer; Florence and the Machine, Bloc Party). Being a producer creates opportunities to collaborate with other artists. She is also heavily involved in musical theatre as the seasons begin (currently, Phantom of the Opera). These opportunities have grown her into the musician and artist she is today.

Her goal is to pass on the skills and passion for music to her students and enable them to experience the extent of the creative process. Collaborative art has the power to create conversation and bring people together.

Philosophy

My philosophy is to use music to bring people together, a connection and collaboration between cultures, classes, orientation and ages.

Musicianship can be learnt through many different mediums. Besides the guidance a teacher can give, students require support, motivation and guidance to achieve a professional level of skill. This includes the roles of the teacher, student and parent (for student and parent, refer to Practice Tips). The priorities, both musical and educational, are to the student’s best interest. Each lesson time is set aside with full attention to the student.

The main goal is to be able to enable love and appreciation for music in my students and for them to walk away confident of what they know and yearning to know more. They may acquire a new skill, pick up a new hobby or discover a career they would like to pursue in the future. Music as a form of expression and the importance of music is an art form of intention is a great way to bridge divides. Learning music is not enough until you learn about the music - knowing a brief background of the music through the given repertoire or pieces would give the musician an insight to the story behind the piece and composer. It is through these that we may interpret the intention of the artist that connects us.
