Practice Tips

“Practice very slowly, progress very fast”

- Stephen Heller (1813 – 1888)

Hungarian Composer and pianist

Practice makes progress

Practice not only helps the student make progress in learning an instrument but it also improves sight reading and aural skills. Being actively involved in music aids the development of a musician. Diligent routine practice also prepares the student for their next lesson, therefore making an improvement every week.

Parental Involvement

It is important to be involved in your child’s practice. Your child may need guidance, praise and encouragement. Encouraging your child to plan practices and seeing them through and observing their practice (beside them or from afar) can help them both with moral support, providing them with an audience and a facilitator to their progress. Some children work better with privacy so make sure their practice is uninterrupted and their practice environment is desirable.

Recommended Practice

Practice at least half an hour a day. Have a practice plan and make full use of that time. Allocate things to work on for the particular practice time. Looking at the pieces first is a good habit to get into. Work at short section without stumbling and repeat the sections with pauses between to be sure of the part. Maintain concentration through the practice. When attempting new tasks, take them slowly and carefully. Gradually work up to speed with control and with the other techniques in mind.

Music at home

Encouraging music at home is a great way to be exposed to different kinds of music and finding out about personal likes, dislikes and forming opinions. Socially, it brings people together or apart in their preferences and could enhance their character by relating to a piece of music and a great chance to express themselves an individuals. It gives the student a musical role model to look up to and learn from. Music not only helps the student but everyone listening to it. It is linked to your emotions and can make you happy, sad, angry, etc. It is also a great way of therapy without the expensive sessions. If for no reason at all, music at home stimulates the senses and gives you a great chance to relax and create a great atmosphere for any occasion!
